Coronation Cup Round 1 2016

A busy weekend of golf saw some very close results in the Coronation Cup along with some dominating ones.

In Zone 4 played at Dannevirke, it got as close as it can get with Pongaroa and Dannevirke finishing equal on 5 points each. On count-back Pongaroa had 22.5 match wins and Dannevirke 22 match wins. Wow! Interesting that in this zone, the count-back had to go back to the number of halved matches because they were both on 5 points, they had halved the match between themselves and overall they both had 20 “whole” wins. After counting the halves; Pongaroa had 5 and Dannevirke had 4.  There will a lot of players thinking about that simple putt they missed because in the end, a result that close, is probably all that was in it. In 3rd place was Norsewood with 1 point (16 match wins) and rounding up the group was Cape Turn-again, also with 1 point (11.5 match wins).

In Zone 1, which was played at Puketitiri, it was also very close but Wairoa finished on top with 5 points (24 match wins). In 2nd place was the home club Puketitiri with 4 points (20.5 match wins), 3rd were Te Pohue (3 points and 16.5 match points) and Hawkes Bay probably had a disappointing day with 0 points (11 match wins)

In Zone 2, played at Karamu; home course advantage proved to be too much for the other teams, securing all 8 points (5 teams in this zone) and winning 31.5 matches. Three teams finished on four points Napier (24.5 match wins), Waipawa (23 match wins) and Maraenui (also 23 match wins). Onga Onga didn’t have the best of days with 0 points (18 match wins)

In Zone 3, played at Hastings; home advantage showed up again with Hastings dominant with 6 points (28.5 match wins). The faster greens may have proved to be a problem for the country teams but Porongahau finished next best in 2nd with 4 points (19.5 match wins), Takapau 3rd (1 point and 13 match wins) and Waipukurau 4th (also on 1 point and 11 match wins).

In summary the four finalist teams are Karamu, Pongaroa, Wairoa and Hastings. Congratulations to those four clubs for making the finals.

The finals will be played at Dannevirke (Zone 4’s turn to host the final) on the weekend of June 18 and 19. Two matches will be played on the Saturday and one match on the Sunday morning. This gives the visiting teams time to get home at a reasonable hour on the Sunday afternoon and also leaves some time up our sleeves in case the weather causes any problems.

An exciting weekend for the winners; next year maybe for the other clubs but thanks for participating and making it the great event that it is. Many longstanding friendships are re-vitalised on Coronation Cup weekend.
