After 54 holes of golf at Dannevirke over the weekend Pongaroa came out on top, winning the 2016 Coronation Cup. Pongaroa finished with 5 points (wins over Wairoa and Hastings and a half with Karamu) from Hastings on 4 points (with wins over Wairoa and Karamu), Karamu were third on 3 points (win over Wairoa and a half with Pongaroa) and in 4th place were defending champions Wairoa, who didn’t score any points.

Pongaroa beat Hastings 7-5 which took them a long way towards winning but impressively, Pongaroa were down 6-2 to Karamu before Sundays play but managed to win all four games to get the half and secure the overall win.

The course was in great order, the greens especially so a big congratulations to the sole green keeper with Dannevirke and the voluntary members who worked hard to get the course presented like it was. Dannevirke were wonderful hosts and lunch and after golf food were all delicious. The Golf Association extends its gratitude to Dannevirke for the effort put in to make it great for all those who competed.

To the referees who came down and officiated over the event, a big thank you and finally to Allan Forrest and Russell Burns who ran the event for the Golf Association,  thank you as well.

Attached is a photo of the winning Pongaroa team who won the Cup, a cup they wouldn’t give up after the prize giving as it was on its way to be filled up at their local hotel, but hopefully we’ll see it back again soon.

A big congratulations to Pongaroa for winning the Cup and of course to the other finalists as well; Hastings, Karamu and Wairoa who all travelled, stayed over and boosted the economy of Dannevirke in the process!
