Greenwood Cup 2025
The final weekend of the Greenwood Cup took place at Hastings Golf Club on 15th & 16th of November.
After weekend #1 at Waipukurau Hastings & Onga Onga were the only undefeated teams through 3 rounds. Hawkes Bay, Dannevirke & Napier all sat 1 win back.
Saturday morning saw some crunch matches to start the final weekend.
Round #4:
Hastings def. Napier 5.5 – 4.5
Onga Onga def. Central HB 8 – 2
Hawkes Bay def. Karamu 8 – 2
Dannevirke def. Maraenui 8 – 2
This saw Hastings & Onga Onga become the only undefeated teams with 3 rounds to go. The after round would become critical to see who would go into the last day atop the leaderboard.
Round #5:
Hastings def. Hawkes Bay 6.5 – 3.5
Maraenui & Central HB drew 5 – 5
Napier def. Karamu 9 – 1
Dannevirke def. Onga Onga 6-4
The afternoon results saw Hastings become the only undefeated team going into the final day with Onga Onga slipping slightly with their narrow loss the Dannevirke.
The final day saw the major match of Onga Onga vs Hastings to determine who would have the best chance to take the trophy for 2025.
Round #6:
Onga Onga def. Hastings 5.5 – 4.5
Napier def. Central HB 9 – 1
Maraenui def. Karamu 6.5 – 3.5
Dannevirke def. Hawkes Bay 7.5 – 2.5
Onga Ongas win against Hastings saw 3 teams tied at the top going in to the last round with Hatings, Onga Onga & Dannevirke all having lost 1 match. The final round saw Onga Onga against Hawkes Bay & Hastings vs Dannevirke to determine who would take the trophy for 2025. Hastings had the upper hand on games won at this point giving them 1 hand on the trophy whereas Onga Onga & Dannevirke would need some results to go there way to lift the trophy.
Round #7:
Napier def. Maraenui 8.5 – 1.5
Hawkes Bay def. Onga Onga 6.5 – 3.5
Central HB & Karamu drew 5 – 5
Hastings def. Dannevirke 8 – 2
Hastings convincing victory meant that they could not be caught winning 6/7 matches to be crowned Greenwood Cup champions for 2025.
Onga Onga won the Radonich Salver by the barest of margins from Dannevirke.
There were a host of players that went 6/7 but 1 player went 7/7 with Sam Hucker taking out the Bretherton Buist cup for the best individual player.
