Greenwood Cup 2019 Weekend 1
The 1st weekend of the Greenwood Cup has been completed for 2019.
Waipukurau Golf Club was presented in fantastic condition for the players with the weather gods also being nice with only a very fresh wind to contest with on day 1.
Saturday saw the 1st two rounds completed with solid starts for everyone.
The 1st round in the morning saw some fairly solid victories with Hawkes Bay beating Maraenui 7 – 3, Napier beating the newly formed Central Hawkes Bay 8 – 2. The defending champions Hastings got off on the right foot with a solid 9 – 1 victory over Dannevirke with Onga Onga rounding out the morning with a 7.5 – 2.5 win over Karamu.
The 2nd round in the afternoon saw the winds get stronger making for a tough time. This saw the scores get a bit closer with Maraenui beating Dannevirke 6.5 – 3.5. Napier continued their form with a solid 7-3 win over Karamu. Hastings and Hawkes Bay had a great battle of the Bridge Pa neighbours with Hawkes Bay coming out with a slim 5.5 – 4.5 win to stay unbeaten. Onga Onga also continued their winning ways with a hard fought 5.5 – 4.5 win over Central Hawkes Bay.
After the only rain of the weekend coming overnight on Saturday the golf course soften up a little bit for round 3 on Sunday morning. Napier, Onga Onga & Hawkes Bay all aiming at remaining unbeaten for the whole weekend. The matches were the tightest of the weekend with a lot coming down to the final holes. Hastings got back to their winning form with a 9 – 1 victory over Central Hawkes Bay. Maraenui had a solid 7 – 3 win over Karamu. It was a tight battle between 2 of the unbeaten teams Onga Onga & Hawkes Bay with Onga Onga coming out the narrow victors 6 – 4. Napier the only other unbeaten team had a solid win 8 – 2 against Dannevirke.
After the 3 rounds of the weekend it left Onga Onga & Napier unbeaten on 6pts. Hot on their heels are Hawkes Bay, Hastings & Maraenui on 4 points.
This leaves it all to play for on the last weekend with the last 4 rounds at Hawkes Bay Golf Club on November 16th & 17th.
