Greenwood Cup Winners 2017: Napier Golf Club

After an intense weekend of golf Napier GC remained unbeaten to claim the prestigious Greenwood Cup. Napier and Maraenui were unbeaten going into the weekend and Hastings, who were hosting had suffered a loss to Hawkes Bay the first weekend, so needed to win both games on Sunday to threaten the Napier/Maraenui winner.

Napier played Maraenui on Saturday and in a close encounter came out on top 6-4, so the first critical match had been decided. Hastings had two wins so crunch time for all 3 contenders was Sunday. Maraenui beat OngaOnga in the morning so all eyes were on the Napier – Hastings match. It was as tight as you can get and in one of the last pairings home T. Whitehouse who was one down, pitched in beautifully on 18 to birdie the hole, taking that match to be all square and giving Napier an overall result of 5.5 to 4.5.

Napier was looking good at this stage and it would have needed a loss to OngaOnga in the afternoon and win by Maraenui for them to be toppled. In another session of tense golf Maraenui and Hastings halved and Napier were taken to the wire by a game OngaOnga but eventually Napier came out on top 6-4. A fantastic performance from Napier who have some up and coming young stars in their team, along of course with a few experienced gentlemen as well. A great combination as Napier were unbeaten after 7 matches, so obviously end up on 14 points.

Maraenui were amazingly close, if they had got up over Hastings and Napier had lost, they may have scraped in by a single game point, but eventually finished on 11 points. Hawkes Bay were 3rd on 10 points and certainly had their moments, obviously winning 5 matches and taking Hasting’s scalp. Hastings finished 4th on 9 points and needless to say will be somewhat disappointed with that.

While the Country Clubs compete in the Greenwood, they also play for the Radonich trophy, the best of the Country clubs, and the winner of this was Dannevirke; 2017 being the 1st time they have achieved this. Congratulations to Dannevirke (6 points) who beat all the other country Clubs in matches to win this trophy. OngaOnga were second with 4 points, Waipukarau 2 points and Takapau didn’t have a great Greenwood/Radonich, unable to score a point.

There were a number of unbeaten players throughout the course of the two weekends play and while they didn’t win them all, the following were unbeaten, so congratulations go to:

Perry Simpson         3 wins and 4 halves

Dave Wilkinson       5 wins and 2 halves

Carlos Tawera          6 wins and 1 half

The Bretherton Buist Cup which is for the best performing player and while those unbeaten are contenders, those with 7 wins from 7 games hold preference as the winner.

Those that had the perfect result included:

Russell Mitchell

Gabriel Whincop

Christian Walker

Zack Swannick

Mako Thompson

The eventual winner was Mako Thompson, as he was the highest ranked player amongst this group, playing no.1 for Maraenui. Mako’s good form continues on – he is having an outstanding 2017!

So Congratulations to Mako and of course also to all of the players who won 7 out 7! Interestingly there is lot of youth amongst these top players which augers well for their playing futures.

Many thanks to the team at the Hastings Golf Club for making the course available and as usual it was in such splendid condition. The referees were on hand throughout the tournament and we thank them for giving up their time in making the event so successful.

To Russell Burns for putting the draw together and administrating the weekend, many thanks to you. By all accounts there were not too many problems and your watchful eye kept everything in order.

I am sure Russell and many others from the Napier Golf Club would have kicked on into the wee hours to celebrate what was an outstanding result. Again congratulations.

Kind Regards

Wayne Mudgway
