NZ Women's Interprovincials 2019

The NZ Women’s Interprovincials was held at Maraenui Golf Club between Tuesday 3rd December and finished on Saturday 7th December.

The team that was selected to represent Hawke’s Bay & Poverty Bay Women was:

  1. Tess McDonald (Poverty Bay Golf Club)
  2. Janie Field (Napier Golf Club)
  3. Clare Choi (Maraenui Golf Club)
  4. Martha Manaena (Hastings Golf Club)
  5. Fiona Ellis (Hastings Golf Club)
  6. Reserve – Ellen Ball (Poverty Bay Golf Club)

The team had a bye in the 1st round on Tuesday morning which meant their 1st game was Tuesday afternoon against our neighbors Manawatu/Wanganui. It turned out to be a tough afternoon for the team with Manawatu/Wanganui coming out winners 4-1.

Round 3 on Wednesday morning saw the team against defending champions Auckland. After a tough fought morning with the top 2 matches going to the last hole unfortunately Auckland were just too strong winning 5-0. In the afternoon for round 4 the team were up against Wellington. Looking to sneak a victory against another tough team it was a tight tussle all afternoon with most matches going long into the back nine Wellington snuck away with the win 3.5-1.5.

Round 5 was on Thursday morning with the team aiming for a win against Aorangi.  It was very tight for most of the morning with two matches going both ways to sit at 2-2 with the last match going down the 18th hole. The teams could not be separated with it ending in a halve to make it 2.5-2.5.  Round 6 in the afternoon saw the team take on Taranaki which saw yet another tight afternoon with Taranaki managing to take away the win 3-2 with yet another match going to the last hole to determine a winner.

Friday saw the last of the round robin matches with the teams last round robin match against Otago. As it has been all week it turned out to be another tight match with 3 matches going the distance all the way to the 18th hole with nothing separating the 2 teams it came away even 2.5-2.5.

This saw the team finish in 6th place in division 1 which would see them in a playoff for 11th place vs Tasman on Saturday. In the playoff match much like the rest of the week the matches went well into the back nine but unfortunately Tasman came away too strong with a 4-1 Victory.

In the main finals Auckland were looking to defend their title and win for the 4th time in a row against Manawatu/Wanganui. It was a very tightly contested final after Manawatu/Wanganui had beaten the defending champions earlier in the week. After some very close matches Auckland came away with the narrowest of victories 3-2 to win the NZ Women’s Interprovincials for 2019. Congratulations to Auckland who will look to defend their title in their back yard in 2020 with it being held at Akarana Golf Club.
